What Engineers Should Include in a Die Casting RFQ

Short answer: a 3D model, your alloy preference (or performance requirement), which features need machining versus as-cast tolerance, and real volume numbers are the core of a quotable die casting RFQ.
The model and print
Send a 3D model plus a 2D print with the features that actually need tight tolerance called out. As-cast tolerance is inherently looser than machined tolerance — if every dimension on the print carries a tight generic tolerance, we either have to assume everything needs secondary machining (raising cost) or ask which features are truly critical.
Alloy preference or performance requirement
If you already know you want aluminum or zinc, say so. If you're not sure, describe the requirement instead — weight target, strength, detail level, finish, environment — and we'll recommend an alloy. See our article on aluminum vs. zinc die casting for the tradeoffs we'll be weighing.
Machining allowance and critical features
Identify which features (bores, threads, flatness, sealing surfaces) need tighter-than-as-cast tolerance. This affects both the casting design (machining stock has to be planned into the part) and the quote (secondary machining is priced separately from the casting itself).
Volume — annual and initial order
Die and trim die tooling decisions depend on real volume. Tell us your honest annual estimate and initial order quantity; this drives tool steel selection and cavitation recommendations.
Existing tooling status
Tell us if a casting die already exists at another supplier and needs to transfer, versus a new part needing new tooling. A transfer requires incoming tool inspection and trial shots on our equipment before production release — see our article on transferring a mold to a new manufacturer (the same qualification logic applies to die casting tooling).
Finish requirements
State whether the part needs powder coating, plating-ready surface prep, or ships as-cast/as-machined. This affects both process planning and cost, and should be part of the original RFQ rather than a later addition.
Required documentation
If your program requires specific inspection documentation or material certifications, include that in the RFQ so it's planned into the quote and process, not added after the fact.
